When caring for your jewelry at home, soap, water, and a toothbrush are the best for someone without a steamer or ultrasonic cleaner. Many gemstones including pearls, emeralds, and opals should be cleaned exclusively with soap and water. Many compounds and solutions in place of soap and water are available for purchase, and often produce desirable results.

Note: It is ill-advised to subject your gold jewelry to chlorine bleach. Bleach will attack the alloy structure of gold and weaken the overall structure of your jewelry.
